Altman’s Short Cuts: the first-ever film TYIB.
Comparing this film to jazz seems to belittle what its most successful at: stitching together each of our own tragedies. There’s an added weight in seeing how each of these characters intersect and respond to each other’s situations. Carver’s stories–though utterly brilliant–always ended up leaving me feeling isolated and heartbroken, but Altman made it easy for me to sake solstice in the fact that we’re never really all that alone.
Standout Performance: Tim Robbins as Gene Sheppard.
Standout Scene: Everything involving phone sex.
