Recently, we’ve heard some stories. It might be easy to write these stories off as isolated instances–as if they are not systemic, patriarchal problems that we face (or even encourage//cultivate) on a day-to-day basis. I’ve worked very hard to cultivate what I believed to be a supportive environment where all people–men, women, LBGT peepz, trans peepz, dogs with problematic lymph nodes, whales, even libertarians–feel safe to be in the company of other like-minded, book-loving people. But sometimes we fail I’ve heard things lately that make me sick–not just about New York or Alt-Lit or the internet, but about the DC community, as well.
Some people have spoken up. Others have felt silenced. Victims shouldn’t need to feel silenced. And that’s why I’m in 100% support of what Meg and Michelle and Laura and Tracy are trying to do to give victims a set of ears. I don’t want to say more, because I am a male and I do not need to insert my voice//ears here. If you need to reach out, you should reach the heck out.
